How to write a research proposal for a PhD or MPhil scholarship (with structure)

A research proposal is a short plan of the research you want to do, usually 1,000 to 1,500 words, that PhD programmes and research scholarships (Commonwealth PhD, MEXT, ANSO, DAAD) use to judge your idea, your knowledge of the field and whether a supervisor can take you. It needs a clear question, a method you can actually carry out and a reason the work matters.

Quick facts
Length Usually 1,000–1,500 words (follow the call’s limit)
Who asks for it PhD and research scholarships: Commonwealth PhD, MEXT, ANSO, DAAD and others
Judged on Clear question, knowledge of the literature, feasible method, originality
Best first step Contact a possible supervisor before submitting

Research proposal structure

  1. Working title: clear and specific.
  2. Introduction: the topic, the problem and why you want to study it.
  3. Literature review: the key arguments and findings in your area, and the gap your study fills.
  4. Aims and research questions: one main question and two or three sub-questions.
  5. Methods: how you will collect and analyse data, what resources you need and any access problems.
  6. Timetable: the main stages by year and likely challenges.
  7. Significance: the original contribution and why it matters, including for Pakistan.
  8. References: the key sources you cite.

Checklist

  • Within the word limit
  • One clear research question
  • Method fits the question and is doable in 3–4 years
  • At least 10–15 recent, relevant references
  • Linked to a supervisor’s or lab’s work at the university

Tips

  • Email a professor first. Manchester and most universities recommend discussing your idea before applying.
  • Keep it realistic. A narrow question you can answer beats a huge one.
  • You can change it later. Supervisors expect the plan to develop.
